Marlins acquire IF Jonathan Villar, 1B Jesus Aguilar

Dec. 3 (UPI) — The Miami Marlins have acquired infielder Jonathan Villar and first baseman Jesus Aguilar.

Miami acquired Villar in a trade from the Baltimore Orioles. Aguilar landed in Miami off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. The moves were announced Monday, minutes after the 8 p.m. EST tender deadline.

The Marlins designated infielder J.T. Riddle and pitcher Tayron Guerrero for assignment in order to make room for Villar and Aguilar on the 40-man roster.

Aguilar, 29, hit .236 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs in 131 games last season for the Milwaukee Brewers and Rays. The 2018 All-Star owns a career .256 average with 63 homers in 448 games.

Villar, 28, hit .274 with a career-high 24 home runs while playing in a league-high 162 games last season. Villar is a career .261 hitter with 78 home runs and 202 stolen bases in 779 games.

The Marlins sent Minor League pitcher Easton Lucas to the Orioles in the trade for Villar. Riddle was non-tendered, meaning he is now a free agent. The Marlins also tendered contracts to Jose Urena and Adam Conley for 2020.

Aguilar and Villar are now in arbitration, meaning their contracts will be decided later.
